Welcome to the new website!
Here is where I am supposed to say something uplifting and forward-looking.
So here goes…
It’s an exciting time to be a poet, writer, and activist. It’s an exciting time to
be on college campuses building with students, performing at shows, flying
out to conferences, giving talks on cultural boycott, doing poetry workshops
at high schools, and brainstorming with groups. Why? Because it matters, it’s
making a difference; not necessarily my work per se, but the engagement, the
push for something better, reaffirming the notion that if we invest in the
grassroots, it will pay dividends (and not in a grimy capitalist way).
Today, we see Omar Barghouti
and Ali Abunimah
speaking before large
crowds. We see brilliant minds like Noura Erekat
, Huwaida Arraf
, and YousefMunayyer
flooding US newspapers and blogs. We’ve seen uncompromising
articles, investigative pieces, and blogs coming out of all sectors of Palestine.
Voices like Jalal Abukhater, Linah Alsaafin
, & Rana Baker
blogosphere and online media by storm. Yes, it’s important; yes, it’s a turning
point. For far too long, the Palestinian voice was replaced, our narrative was a
tale told by others. For far too long our voices were too “brown,” not “palatable
enough,” or too “other” for the mainstream. That is changing, and not because
the mainstream became inviting, but because Palestinians pushed down the doors.
We’ve seen a reshaping of the media landscape in the US, brilliant PR, flotillas,
& broad based marches for Palestine. Palestinians, from Nabi Saleh to Nil’in
continue to courageously rise up for the rights, taking live fire, rubber bullets,
tear gas canisters, pepper spray and fists to the body. We've watched 1000s of
Palestinians refuse their basic lifeline, numerous nearing death, to protest the
inhumane, anti-democratic, and brutal treatment they face in Israeli prison.
We have seen BDS victory
after BDS victory
, from artist cancellations to
deshelving campaigns to divestment initiatives, the foundation is being laid and
Israel doesn’t know how to deal with it.
In closing, I’ll be posting poems, videos, news, blogs, random thoughts and
statements. Act on Palestine. Act against injustice. Whether you love what you
see on this blog or hate its contents, find what makes you passionate and charge
